ISO 50001

What is ISO 50001?

Wind turbine in blue and white cloudy sky ISO 50001:2018, including Amendment 1:2024, specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an Energy Management System (EnMS). The intended outcome is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach to continually improving its energy performance and the EnMS itself. Amendment 1:2024, “Climate action changes,” added climate action considerations to the standard.

Like other ISO management system standards, ISO 50001 is built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. Organizations review how and where they use energy, identify the biggest opportunities for improvement, set objectives and action plans, monitor and measure results, and continually improve. The standard does not prescribe a specific level of savings; it requires you to demonstrate continual improvement in energy performance, regardless of the type or quantity of energy you use. However, in order to achieve recertification to 50001, you must demonstrate an improvement in energy performance from your baseline.

Who needs ISO 50001?
