A radar scope on a console in a dark roomOne of the most effective ways to manage the complexity and expense of CMMC certification is to proactively define and minimize your assessment scope. “Scoping” refers to the identification of specific network segments, personnel, and physical locations that handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). If an item is in scope, it must be assessed against every relevant control.

Why “Shrinking the Scope” Matters

Many companies assume their entire enterprise network must be CMMC compliant. In reality, the DoD allows for organizational boundaries to be established. If you can limit the amount of hardware, software, and staff that interact with CUI, you can significantly reduce the size of the environment subject to mandatory controls.

3 Practical Steps to Define Your Boundaries

  1. Analyze Data Flows: Map exactly where CUI enters your organization, where it is stored, and where it is processed. If a specific department or physical office does not interact with CUI, they may be excluded from the scope.
  2. Review Physical Assets: Assess whether your office printers, physical servers, or mobile devices are actually required for work involving CUI. If they are not, keeping them out of the CUI environment may removes the need for specific physical security controls on those assets.
  3. The Importance of the Scoping Call: Before engaging in an assessment, conduct a formal scoping call. During this process, ask critical questions such as:
    1. Do we print CUI at home or in satellite offices?
    2. Are external hard disks or USB “thumb drives” allowed?
    3. Which employees have access to the CUI repository?

By answering questions early, an organization can implement technical and physical controls to restrict CUI to a “clean room” or a secure, isolated network segment. This targeted approach is far more efficient than attempting to secure an entire, sprawling infrastructure.
