As we approach Global Recycling Day on March 18, 2024, it’s crucial for industries and organizations across the spectrum to recognize and bolster their commitment to recycling and sustainability. PJR underscores the significance of this day and the vital role of recycling in safeguarding our planet’s future.

The Earth’s natural resources are finite, and the urgency to adopt sustainable practices has never been more pronounced. The past decade, marked as the hottest on record, has laid bare the climate emergency we face. Rising global temperatures, melting ice caps, and deforestation are not just environmental issues but crises that directly impact humanity through increased poverty, immigration, and job losses.

Recycling, a critical component of the circular economy, is at the forefront of efforts to combat these challenges. By viewing waste not as an endpoint but as the beginning of a new cycle, we can protect our natural resources and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The Global Recycling Foundation has chosen #RecyclingHeroes as the theme for Global Recycling Day 2024, highlighting the individuals and organizations dedicated to fostering an environmentally stable and greener future. This year, Global Recycling Day is also sponsored by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, ISRI.

At PJR, we align with the Global Recycling Day mission, advocating for recycling as a global priority and encouraging a shift in perception from waste to resource. Through our certification processes, we support businesses in implementing sustainable practices, contributing to the global green agenda and securing a viable future for our planet. Perry Johnson Registrars is committed to excellence and staying ahead of regulatory changes. Recently, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) announced significant amendments to the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards, specifically addressing climate change, with more standards to follow. These amendments, which took effect immediately upon publication, underscore the importance of climate change as a strategic consideration within an organization’s management system.

The key changes involve a requirement for organizations to determine whether climate change is a relevant issue within the context of their management systems and to integrate this consideration into their risk evaluations. Notably, the amendments do not alter the core clauses 4.1 and 4.2 of the referenced standards, but they do clarify the need for organizations to consider climate change as an internal and external issue that may affect the organization and its compliance with legal requirements.

How does this impact PJR clients? Starting from the 31st of March, 2024, all audits will include an assessment of how organizations have incorporated climate change considerations into their management systems. Auditors will engage in the Leadership Interview to probe the organization’s approach to climate change, but will not question the client’s conclusion on the relevance of climate change to their operations. Instead, auditors will focus on verifying that a systematic and effective approach to climate change has been adopted and is evident within the management system.

PJR is here to support your organization through these changes. To learn more about the ISO amendments and how they might affect your audits, please reach out to PJR today at pjr@pjr.com.

In the male-dominated landscape of manufacturing, the narrative of ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) has long plagued women workers, raising concerns about safety and inclusivity.

Safety boots that don’t fit are a pervasive issue for women in manufacturing. The disparity in PPE not only jeopardizes safety but also perpetuates a culture of exclusion. Traditional approaches, like the “shrink it and pink it” concept, fail to address the unique needs of women in industrial settings. Women demand more than resized versions of men’s gear—they seek tailored solutions that prioritize safety without compromising comfort or style.

Beyond rectifying the tangible shortcomings of PPE, some endeavors pave the way for a more inclusive future—one where women are not just accommodated but celebrated for their contributions to the industry. Women are looking for a cultural shift—one that embraces diversity as a cornerstone of progress.

As we celebrate the strides made towards gender-inclusive workplaces, let us follow this call to action: to dismantle barriers and pave the way for a future where women, irrespective of their profession, find safety, dignity, and belonging. If your organization is looking for health and safety certification, feel free to contact us by phone at (248) 358-3388 or email pjr@pjr.com.
